Melanie Britton has spent the last 20 years doing what she loves…teaching music! Working with teenagers and building successful high school band and choir programs has been her passion and her student groups have won 6 International Championships, performed in Carnegie Hall, featured performers on Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, travelled internationally, award winners in the 2011 Fiesta Bowl National Band Championship and Parade, and are consistent winners of Superior ratings throughout the country. This year Melanie was recognized in “School Band & Orchestra Magazine” as one of “America’s Top 50 Director’s Who Make a Difference”. She was named the inaugural “America’s Outstanding Mom” in 2010, won the title of “Mrs. Arizona” United States 2009, and in 2008 she was honored to be named the DVUSD “Teacher of the Year”.
Melanie decided to “break out of her comfort zone” and enter the pageant world to raise awareness about the importance of keeping the Fine Arts as an integral part of our Nation’s public school curriculum. Through her previous pageant titles she has been able to work with education outreach programs with the Phoenix Opera and Ballet Arizona, volunteer with Free Arts of Arizona, serve as Vice President of the Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association, the Arizona Representative to Women Band Directors International and continues her membership with the National Association for Music Education. She also enjoys serving as a guest conductor and clinician and has recorded several CD’s.
Life’s greatest accomplishment for Melanie though is being a mom! She cherishes the incredible relationship she has with her amazing 17 year old daughter Alexis who is also a student in her band! Alexis is a straight A honor student, high ranking member of JROTC, Band Council Member, Freshman Mentor, and a member of the World Class “The Academy” Drum & Bugle Corps! According to Melanie, “She is the perfect child”!
Married to her “Prince Charming” husband, Richard, together they really do share a fairy tale story. Richard and Melanie were the 1987 Homecoming King & Queen in their hometown. 10 years later they met up at their 10 year reunion and have been happily married ever since. Even though they have known each other almost 25 years, she still gets butterflies just thinking of her husband and fully credits God for showering her life, family and marriage with so many blessings.
